On Demand Services
Entrepreneur disrupts the contract-based status quo in snow removal services.
Ottawa is no stranger to harsh winter conditions. Entrepreneur and businessman Ken Dale, a city native with over 25 years in the snow and ice removal industry, is used to the status quo where homeowners sign on for season-long contracts to have snow removed from their driveways. What he also saw was an under-served segment of homeowners that didn’t want the commitment of signing the contract, but still wanted the option to have their property cleared on a case-by-case basis. The demand was there, but the system was not.

To bring Dale’s vision to life, Iversoft developed TouchPlow, a mobile application that facilitates the connection between under-served customers and available service providers. Snow removal companies, professional plow drivers, and snowblowers can register as service providers online and users can access and pay for one-time services through the TouchPlow app. The app allows for customers’ needs to be met during busy periods and for service providers to build their businesses through these additional jobs.
The app, made available on iOS and Android, was first released in Ottawa and now serves 80 cities across Canada. Intuitive to use, customers choose the service they want, when they want to schedule it for, the equipment required, and their budget. Without committing to any contracts, users’ requests are fulfilled within the app using location services to match customers to local service providers. Iversoft kept payment within the app for users, and providers are paid directly by TouchPlow, streamlining the whole transaction through e-commerce. TouchPlow has won App of the Week by Phone Freaks, Mobilesyrup, iPhone in Canada, and Techopia.
